What are Checkpoints in a project's versions?

I’ve looked around and couldn’t find information about Project Checkpoints. I’m referring to the blue Checkpoint tag:

Is this strictly a visual tag or does it provide specific features in a project’s version management?

Also, how are Backup versions chosen? Do we have liberty on which versions to use as backups?

Hello,

  • Backups are the 5 last versions that went into production (versions that only go in staging and are never promoted to production do not become backups.) If a new backup is created, the older one will be deleted if there are more than 5 backups.
  • Checkpoints can be set by users and are never deleted
