WeWeb for a simple interactive touch screen app?

Hi all,

I am an exhibit and UX/interaction designer, and I came across WeWeb looking for a tool that would allow us to implement simple interactive info terminals ourselves, which is something that our customers often ask for. I am designing a simple info app for a health care company and they want to display it on a large touch screen device to visitors in an exhibit booth.

I was thinking a HTML5/Javascript app (running locally on the device) would be the right set up (though I am not a IT person and this is up for discussion).

I would like to get your opinions on the following points:

  • Is it possible to implement this with a no-code tool like WeWeb? How much experience do you need? What back end is necessary in addition to the front end (I think WeWeb separates front and back end)
  • Is it possible to download the code and have it run locally on the customers device? Are there any downsides to this? What kind of WeWeb plan do I need for this? Am I assuming correctly that I need an starter plan that runs for a year at least because of code export?
  • Are there alternatives? Is it maybe simpler to do with another tool (or no tool at all?)

I am working on the wireframes right now, but until they are finished here’s a short description of what I am trying to do:

The app is designed to provide digital access to selected content, including the following key features:

  • Start and Selection Screen:
    • A large-text start screen invites visitors to explore the content.
    • Touching a button on this screen leads to the selection screen.
    • The selection screen presents three content sections with brief descriptions for visitors to choose from.
    • Each content section includes a “Back” or “Home” button for returning to the selection screen.
After a period of inactivity (e.g., 40 seconds), the software resets to the start screen.
  • Content Section 1: Interactive Videos
    • Existing videos are integrated for display in the app
    • Four different videos are available, each in two versions or more versions
    • Visitors can select and view a video. After the video is finished playing, they have the option to view the video again in a different version
    • Each video concludes with a screen displaying comments or additional information.
    • Videos are presented in a video player with controls (Play/Pause, timeline, possibly a “next video/other version” button) in a window or fullscreen mode.
  • Content Section 2
    • This interactive feature allows visitors to drag and drop in order a set of items according to their subjective preference
    • Visitors can make their selection and submit
    • After they have confirmed their selection they get feedback based on a “generally accepted” best sequence of the items
    • Optional: Visitors’ selection is stored; they get feedback based on what other visitors have submitted before them (on average)
  • Content Section 3:
    • A set of flipping/flippable cards (9-12) is displayed with their front content showing (text/image)
    • Users can flip the cards by tapping or swiping, then the back content is shown (also text/image, possibly a button such as “learn more”)

Thanks for any guidance

This is all doable. But I’d test interactions first with your kiosks

Hey @Broberto , thanks for your reply. I’m not sure what exactly you mean. Do you think we should build a simple test app and try to run it on the device to see if touch screen interactivity works correctly? And we should build it with WeWeb? Or are there demo apps for that that we could use?

It’s a good idea, although it won’t be easy because our customer is somewhat far away and we don’t have a device like that here.

Yes, I would do that. It could save you a lot of money in case you gotta find some other way/rebuild the app according to the hardware. Always test, is what my past experiences taught me. It should be a simple test in this case, you can build a weweb app with some rectangles to tap etc.

By the way if you’d need someone to develop it, I have a team on hand, and we love challenges and apps that are a little out of the ordinary development

Hi @pingIV

I’m not sure if WeWeb is what you are looking for. You can absolutely build something like that in WeWeb, but you will need internet access and a modern browser on those touch screen devices.
Even if you export the code, this will generate code that has to be hosted on a server, not on the end device.

Hey @Max thanks for the hint. We are currently looking into options, so this is helpful. Are there NoCode tools you are aware of that might me more suitable for the job?

We are currently considering our options but hiring someone to do it is certainly one of them. I’ll keep it in mind and will get in touch when we decide what we are going to do!

Unfortunately no.
WeWeb is an excellent tool for that if the devices have internet connection.
It would also benefit the rollout, if you have a web app. If you need to apply changes, this can be done in one place and all apps update accordingly. If you want to have a short chat, how the setup would work, just send me a PM.

Hi there, if you want, you can book a call with me and we can discuss your use case.

BTW, just want to make something clear - You do not need internet access to run a Weweb app.

Hi @Slavo
How would this work then?

You can run it locally, as any web app.

Exactly. To run, WeWeb needs a web server. But that web server does not need the internet to run.

Yeah, you are correct of course. You could host a web server locally.
