Best practice for storing variables in list items to support complex caclulations

I have a collection list that has several fields that are the result of some underlying complex financial calcuations. What is the best practice to save formulas as variables at the list item level that can be referenced in several field calculations on that list item.

My understanding is if I use a text field as storage for the variable and then hide it, it will not caclulate unless it is visible. I don’t want to resort to doing the calcs in the database unless there is no other way.
